GEO vs SEO: The Difference and Where to Invest First
By the HowsMyGEO team · Published · Updated
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the discipline of earning a high position in a ranked list of links. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the discipline of being quoted inside the AI-generated answer itself. They overlap — both reward crawlable, well-structured, trustworthy content — but they diverge in ways that decide where your next hour of work should go.
What do SEO and GEO have in common?
The foundations are shared. Both need crawler access, clean HTML, sensible titles and headings, structured data, HTTPS and reasonable performance. A site with broken fundamentals fails both disciplines at once — which is why our scanner reports the two scores side by side from a single crawl.
Where do they diverge?
- The crawler list is different. Ranking on Google needs Googlebot; being in ChatGPT's answers needs GPTBot; Claude needs ClaudeBot; Perplexity needs PerplexityBot; Google's AI features draw on Google-Extended. A robots.txt written before 2023 has an opinion about none of them — and a blanket-block written since often disallows all of them.
- JavaScript tolerance is different. Google renders JavaScript; most AI crawlers don't. A React storefront that ranks fine can be an empty page to an AI engine.
- The unit of competition is different. SEO competes page-vs-page for a position. GEO competes passage-vs-passage for a citation: engines lift the paragraph that answers the question most directly, with the clearest attribution. Question-shaped headings, direct answers, visible dates and named authors all raise the odds your paragraph is the one lifted.
- The failure mode is different. Losing at SEO means fewer clicks. Losing at GEO means absence — the answer simply doesn't mention you, and the customer never learns you were an option.
Where should a business invest first?
If your SEO fundamentals are broken, fix those first — they feed both scores. If your SEO is respectable, the highest-return work is almost always GEO, for one reason: the gap is wider. Competitive keywords have had twenty years of optimisation thrown at them; almost nobody has optimised for AI citation yet. A robots.txt edit and an llms.txt file take an afternoon and move you from invisible to indexable across five answer engines — there is no SEO change with that effort-to-impact ratio left.
The practical order of operations: unblock AI crawlers, confirm your content is in the server HTML, add llms.txt, then reshape your highest-intent pages to answer questions directly. Our methodology weights the checks in roughly that order, and the free scan tells you which of them you're failing today.
