What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making a website findable, readable and citable by AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Where SEO optimises for ranked lists of links, GEO optimises for being quoted inside generated answers — a different job with different failure modes.
HowsMyGEO scores GEO out of 100 across 7 weighted checks. The two heaviest are AI crawler access (25 points) — whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and CCBot are allowed in your robots.txt — and content extractability (20 points), whether your content exists in the server HTML at all, since AI crawlers largely don't execute JavaScript.
